A couple of years ago I wrote some haiku to celebrate my dad on his birthday. I am sharing those here, along with a few new verses. This year on December 18 he celebrates a Big One, a milestone that not many in his family have reached. When it comes to dads, I struck gold, you guys. Hands down. And because I know that each day with family is not a promised certainty, I celebrate now with deep gratitude. To you, Dad, my biggest supporter. I celebrate you. Sprawled across carpet coloring Barbie with me brow furrowed in thought Colorblind Daddy I was always the winner playing Candyland Lying warm in bed your boots echoed out the door farmer to harvest A Christmas surprise ice-cold gifts in the attic "Look! I found one more!" Once I missed curfew your dusty mail car found me now family folklore A summer 10K cheering my dad, the hero Nutty Bars await Working on the farm my paintbrush found a rat's tail You ran to my scream Date night and perfume you are spouses and best friends you taught me real love Popcorn, warm fire asleep in your recliner winter nights at home Under lacy veil a tender kiss on the cheek baby girl, a bride The tears in your eyes as we suffered grief and loss taught me of real men A grandpa again, and this time through adoption you love them the same Their laughter echoes my childhood playground, theirs Grandpa fits you well Your strength inspires Internal and external I hope he’s like you Grown now to woman And still you're my best teacher Work hard and love well
